Have you ever heard of a "Bo Derek stock?" Me neither. But it is a term contained in the seventh edition of the Dictionary Barron's Finance and Investment Terms. When I was in college, we had to buy it, and I'm embarrassed to say that the first editions I bought at that time did not seem half as thick as the current version. And I think the reason for the swelling of the new edition is that many terms of date have not yet been eliminated.
So, what is an action that complies with Bo Derek in the category? The dictionary says it is a …
"Stock perfect with an exemplary record of earnings growth, product quality, and stock price appreciation. These populations have the name of the movie "10" where Bo Derek was described as the perfect woman. "
I'm Sorry, I've been in this industry the better part of two decades and no one – no broker, an institutional sales, or banking, has ever used this term. The term is simply not relevant. As the term Blue Chip.
A Blue Chip, so says the dictionary, is "common stock of a nationally known company that has a long history of earnings growth and / Or dividend payments and a reputation for quality management, products and services … "
Have you seen any of these lately?
Constellation Energy? That fails the test of management, although there may be some redemption there. General Motors and Ford? Not in the test management, and also, until recently, not the reputation of quality products. AIG? Fannie and Freddie? Lehman? Just do not, period.
Beyond the definition of the Blue Chip is a connotation that has developed over many decades, driven by companies like General Electric. The connotation is that Blue Chips = safety.
The notion that there are safe places to invest in the stock market is dead for always. He died when Bear Stearns collapsed during a weekend and Lehman Brothers Chapter 11.
The Blue Chip idea died with the two companies. Take advantage of IBM, for example. He is the King of the technology that once was, yes, but Big Blue has been a classic of Blue Chip since I came into this business. From a capital markets sense this could be the best thing that happened. No matter how polished a CEO is, no matter how much economic impact of a company acts, and no matter how interwoven in society U.S., any company – public or private – is a no-brainer investment. This is the lesson … (cough – along with not over leverage yourself to buy assets that can not afford) … that the U.S. should take from 2008.
So forget completely chips. Forget the whole concept.
But do not forget to invest in U.S. securities markets. And here's why …
It is true that U.S. stocks was criticized in 2008. But the most common 200 shares really appreciated in 2008, 196 of them have market values of $ 2 billion dollars or less. This means that of the top 200 best-performing stocks of 2008, 98% of them were small-caps. Looking to back at any period of 20 years in the year 1926 stocks, small-caps did better than large-caps most of the time.
